Thursday night my friends and I were out to dinner and the discussion at the table was almost entirely around the Brett Favre trade. Except for the 20 minutes my friend told us about a fifty year old woman that was legitimetly freaked out that she saw a ranbow in the water comming from her sprinkler. Apprantly to can find this on Gurrilla Mask. As we were discussing all the bizzarness of the trade, someting hit me. Why are we not talking about the Brewers who are in a tight pennat race and leading the Wild Card race, and have an opportunity to make the playoffs for the first time in over 20 years.
The conclusion I came to was this. That as soon as August hits a majority of people turn their backs on the Brewers and switch gears so quickly that all they care about it is Green Bay Packer pre-season...Pre-Season! It seems that every year and espeicailly this year, the Packers pre-season seems to dominate in media coverage. Even last year when the Brewers were still in the hunt and playing great competitive ball, everyone seemed to take more stock in who the Packers starting running backs were going to be, rather then can the Brewers make a playoff run. I realize they did blow a tremendous lead in the second half, but can you really blame them. All of a sudden the support system they had since April was gone because the Packers were playing pre-season games and had a running back controversy! It's no wonder the Crew went and lost the lead, when people pick up and fold on your camp that easily it will shake some sort of foundation that you had.
This year I am hoping things will be a little different. The Breweres if they pull off a victory today, which last time I checked they were up 3-1 on Washington, can not only sweep the Nationals in four games at home, but cut the deficit to 3 1/2 games behind the Cubs. And take a 4 1/2 lead over the Cardinals in the Wild Card standings. If they do win that will be six in a row for the Brewers. But how much media attention has this really gotten? C.C. Sabathia and Ben Sheets threw shutouts on Friday and Saturday, Many Parra pithed a great game and Gabe Kapler who is filling in for an injured Ryan Braun hit a walk off hom run on Sunday to win the game in the 13th inning. But all weekend all you can hear about is how Aaron Rodgers will be starting against the Bengals on Monday night football, and can he replace Brett Favre?
I think it is time for a changing of the guard so to speak in Wisconsin. I believe it is time to put your faith in the Brewers and not turn your back on a young competitive team that has been playing great all year. Lets look at it this way. The Packers will more then likely not make the post season this year. Aaron Rodgers will probably become hurt, and he will probably frustrate you more then make you happy durring these months of August and September. Instead of being bitter and cursing Rodgers and praying for Favre to return, why not invest the time and energy into going to a Brewer game or watching them on T.V. Lets support a team that has been playing their hearts out all year. Lets also support an organization that has been trying to dedicate themselves to bringing a winning and competitive team back to Milwaukee for the fans and the city, not an organization that wants to "move forward" so that particular members of the organziation can start names for themsevles.
In conclusion as we head into fall and football is in the air, don't forget that baseball is stilling going on, and we have team in Wisconsin that is playing fantastic and should get the fan support that they deserve. I am not saying abandon Green Bay in what is likely going to be their perilous season, but don't abandon a team that has been proving their worth as well.
