Prince Fielder

28 July 2009

in a few weeks, and Jason Kendall is still trying to muster one up to get out of the infield.  Prince Fielder can't carry a team himself, Braun is trying to help and even Counsell is getting into the swing of things, but their key pieces after Braun/Fielder are somewhat embarassing.

t first.  He makes a clean throw to Weeks, who's covering the bag at first for a bunt-charging Prince Fielder.  Weeks lets the ball trickle from his glove for an error.

Rollins' subsequent popout could have been the third out, or at least the second.  Instead Utley launches one over Cameron's head (tough play, but I was always taught if it hits your glove, it ought to be caught), Gallardo loads the bases and walks Victorino, plating Utley.  Phillies up 3-0 thanks to 3 unearned runs.  The Brewers manage one earned run in the ninth (thanks to clutch pinch hitting from Durham) - which is one more earned run than the Phillies manage all game.

While younger players like Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, JJ Hardy and Corey Hart may not have any playoff experience in their short pasts, they have still played in a number of meaningful games. Fielder and Braun carried the team into October with their bats, Fielder had a 17 game hit streak in October including a number of late hits, and Braun gave the Brewers two final at-bat wins in the last 4 games of the season. The energy on the field and in the stands was only a preview of what is to come in the playoffs for the Brewers as they look to satisfy themselves with much more than a quick appearance in the first week of October.

So far, everybody in the organization is confident that the scuffle is nothing but a poorly timed altercation during the heat of competition. Teammates have already brushed off the incident as nothing more than Monday's loss as they prepare for Tuesday.

e Orioles renewing him for $455,000–a $55,00 raise from last year–comes on the heels of Prince Fielder slamming the Brewers and Jonathan Papelbon claiming the Red Sox need to pay him more. Granted these are all star players who are certainly worth more than they are getting paid, they’ve hardly paid their dues in the Majors and with only two years under their respective belts, haven’t earned the right to start telling their front offices how to conduct business. They will all get their chance to cash in next year when they are eligible for arbitration (players are eligible for arbitration after three full seasons of Major League service time and can file for free agency after six). While it would behoove teams to lock up their young stars, they are under no obligation to and certainly shouldn’t be told how to run the organization by 24 and 25 year olds. Besides, these guys aren’t exactly hurting for money at $400-500,000 per year. Forty years ago, most players made so little they often had to get part time jobs in the off season.
