On September 1st, the thirty-two major league teams called up any players from Double-A and/or Triple-A to fill the expanded 40 man roster. The Milwaukee Brewers add to their roster pitchers Mark DiFelice, Tim Dillard and Mitch Stetter, along with third baseman Mat Gamel, shortstop Alcides Escobar, catcher Angel Salome, infielder Joe Dillon, catcher Vinny Rottino, outfielder Tony Gwynn and first baseman Brad Nelson. So let’s get acquainted with the possible future of the Milwaukee Brewers a little better.
Mark DiFelice. Age 32. Batting/Throwing: R/R
Level(s) played in 2008: Triple-A and MLB
Minor League stats only:
G: 13 GS: 12 IP: 64 1/3 ERA: 3.23 SO: 65 BB: 8
Mark DiFelice was called up on May 16 to replace David Riskie when Riske landed on the DL, DiFelice is expected to be used in a long relief role. DiFelice was a little wild in Triple-A. While he only walked eight batters, he hit four and threw three wild pitches in thirteen games. If he were to stay in the minors and be kept in a starting role those number would mostly likely have continued to climb.
In his past apperances in the major leagues this season, DiFelice has had a hard time keeping the ball in the park. Four of his six earned runs have been in large part due to the four homeruns. I can’t say that DiFelice needs to work on his control, because he hasn’t had a major league walk, yet - but I will say he needs to work a little on control.
Tim Dillard. Age: 24 Batting/Throwing: R/R
Level(s) played in 2008: Triple-A and MLB
Minor league stats only:
G: 37 IP: 63 1/3 ERA: 2.00 WHIP: 1.35 BB: 28 SO: 55
Tim Dillard is making a second trip to the Brewers after a run of bad luck in his first tour. In 8 1/3 innings earlier this season, 10 runners’ scored (5 were earned), he walked five batters, stuck out only three, and had an ERA of 5.40. He was sent back to the minors in anticipation for Rickie Weeks coming off the DL. Dillard isn’t a power pitcher. This may be due to his minor league experience as a spot starter who had to keep his pitch count low, plus Dillard pitched out of the bullpen from time to time. At the start of the 2008 season, the organization decided that he would be better used as a long-relief type of pitcher. This has turned out to be a good career move for Dillard.
Mitch Stetter. Age: 27 Batting/Throwing L/L
Level(s) played in 2008: Triple-A and MLB
Minor league stats only
G: 28 IP: 29 ERA: 2.48 WHIP: 0.97 SO: 30 BB: 7
Mitch Stetter is back in the show again after being optioned back to Triple-A to make room for Jeff Suppan when Soup came off the DL. During Stetter 31 games over his two year major league career, Stetter has pitched 29 innings and struck out 34 batters, but has walked 20, and has an ERA of 3.41 - good, but not great. His major league numbers however, don’t really illustrate how well he has pitched in the minors. In the majors, he has 20 walks, 6 hit batters, and 4 wild pitches. If Stetter wants to be a major factor for the Brewers in the long run he must figure out major league hitting, and possibly get rid of any nervousness. Stetter could very easily walk right into the Brewers left hand-specialist role if Brian Shouse either retires or if he is not resigned after this season.
Stay tune to hear about the Brewers’ young phenomenal fielders.
